Decorating Styles: American Coastal Style
What decorating style reminds you of the beach? American coastal style is one of the most popular decorating styles. It originated on the beaches of America’s Atlantic coast, but can now be seen almost anywhere. It mixes classic design with a casual and relaxed feel. Last month I featured some beautiful coastal style rooms. Today I have seven decorator tips for you on how to put together this look. If you’re wanting to bring a touch of the beach to your home, these tips will help you to create this laid-back style.
Decorating Styles: American Coastal Style
1The most important aspect of American coastal style is incorporating natural elements with lots of texture.
- Natural fiber rugs like jute and sisal
- Woven fabrics such as linen and cotton
- Grasscloth wallcoverings
- Furniture made out of teak, bamboo, wicker or seagrass
2Natural woods can be distressed or weathered. Cerused oak and white washed wood work wonderfully. The whole idea is to keep things light and airy.
3White is the predominant color along with the softer colors of the sand, sea and sky. If not left natural, furniture is usually painted white.
4Window treatments should allow in as much light as possible and help give the space a relaxed open feel. Lightweight panels layered over natural fiber blinds let the light in, but also offer privacy without weighing down the windows.
5Keep the floors easy-care by using tile or wood. Then layer it with your natural fiber rugs.
6White slipcovers promote the casual atmosphere and are very family-friendly. Because they are so easy to care for, they are a favorite choice for beach and vacation homes.
7Add some accessories that are beach inspired or nautical in nature, but don’t overdo it. You want it to casually recall the feeling of the beach or time on a boat at sea.
Of all the decorating styles, American coastal style is one of the most favored. It’s classic in nature, but warm and inviting like a day at the beach. Does this style inspire you?
